Soils are heterogeneous materials that evolve and are deeply shaped by time. The ground must be tested, interpreted, probed, and above all, understood. At the heart of this interpretation lies its characterisation, not merely as a procedural need, but as a way of engaging with its real layered complexity. The eleven papers in this issue of Géotechnique Letters reflect this shared idea: to treat soil not simply as an object of measurement, but as something that speaks, that bears memory and must be listened to with care.
