Construction dewatering is an essential temporary works requirement for many civil engineering projects. The performance of such schemes is critically dependent on minor variations in hydrogeological conditions which can be difficult to identify from conventional site investigation works. Effective use of the observational approach involves identifying the risks and specifying a dewatering system that is sufficiently flexible to meet these. Currently the mechanisms of failure, and therefore the risks, are poorly documented and understood. In this Paper the main failure mechanisms are identified and the procedures for applying the observational approach are illustrated using case studies.

La mise en place de réseaux de drainage est indispensable dans de nombreux projets d'ingénirie civile. Leurs performances dépendent fortement des variations mineures des conditions hydrogéologiques qui sont parfois difficilement identifiables àpartir des études de site conventionnelles. Une utilisation efficace des méthodes d'observation nécessite l'identification des risques et le choix d'un système de drainage suffisamment flexible pour pouvoir s'adapter àces risques. Les mécanismes de rupture, et donc les risques, sont très souvent peu documentés et mal compris. L'article identifie les principaux mécanismes de rupture et présente, sur plusieurs cas de figure, les procédures permettant de mettre en oeuvre les approches par observation directe.
