This study aims to examine the asymmetric effects of digital trust (DT) on corruption (CPI) and sustainable information and communication technology (ICT) (SICT), addressing a significant gap in understanding DT at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) level.
This study uses Quantile regression bootstrap (QRB) to analyse data from 456 OECD countries from 2012 to 2023, examining the differential effects of DT proxies, as measured by cybersecurity and consumer protection frameworks, on CPI and SICT across various quantiles.
Using MQB, the analysis reveals several key findings: (i) there are significant positive DT measures and SICT benefits in OECD countries, including increased DT that fosters greater adoption and responsible use of ICT, enhancing its potential to drive sustainable development through improved efficiency, innovation and equitable access. (ii) There are significant negative DT measures and CPI benefits in OECD countries, where increased DT reduces opportunities for corruption by enhancing transparency, accountability and secure digital interactions, leading to improved governance and lower corruption levels.
This study provides quantitative evidence to support policymakers in prioritising robust cybersecurity measures, data protection regulations and transparency initiatives, thereby fostering trust, promoting digital literacy and ensuring equitable access to ICT, which promotes inclusive and sustainable growth. In addition, the OECD should implement robust data security frameworks, promote digital transparency tools such as e-governance platforms, and enforce anti-corruption regulations to foster trust and reduce corruption in both the public and private sectors.
