This study aims to map the intellectual, conceptual and thematic structure of research on emerging technologies in Islamic finance.
A comprehensive bibliometric analysis was conducted on 428 peer-reviewed documents indexed in Scopus from 2011 to 2024. Using the Bibliometrix R package, the study applies performance analysis, coauthor ship networks, co-citation analysis and co-word clustering to explore scholarly output, influential authors and journals and thematic structures in the field.
The findings reveal nine major research clusters, including Islamic fintech, machine learning, blockchain, cryptocurrencies, cybersecurity and takaful. Malaysia and Indonesia dominate scholarly output. Publication trends show exponential growth post-2018, driven by technological adoption and the COVID-19 crisis. Despite rising interest, gaps remain in Shariah-compliant DeFi, cross-border digital governance and ethical artificial intelligence integration.
This bibliometric review provides a systematic, multidimensional analysis of how emerging technologies intersect with Islamic finance.
