The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important reaction occurring at the cathode of a fuel cell. In this article, the authors demonstrate the use of a borocarbonitride (BC5N)-supported iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc) as a superior non-noble electrocatalyst for the ORR. To assess the ORR activity of BC5N–FePc, cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode measurements have been carried out. The measurements reveal that BC5N–FePc exhibits a more positive onset potential and comparable current density relative to the commercially available Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, BC5N–FePc shows excellent selectivity toward ORR even in the presence of methanol.
