Digital platforms have transformed how businesses create and capture value. However, organizations employing platform business models with two-sided markets lack structured approaches to designing sustainable platform revenue models.
This work applies a design science research methodology to develop an artifact that supports the design of platform revenue models. Building on an established taxonomy, we introduce a platform revenue model canvas as a practical tool and demonstrate its applicability through an illustrative real-world application in the German healthcare sector.
The proposed platform revenue model canvas contributes to the literature and practice in two ways: (1) it introduces a tool for designing platform revenue models and (2) it demonstrates how a taxonomy can support the structured design of platform revenue models in a healthcare marketplace context.
We provide an illustration in an applied context to show how the canvas can be used. While the illustrative application indicates its utility in a specific business context, we recommend further evaluation across domains and use cases to assess its generalizability and guide future refinement.
