The Øresund Fixed Link, which is due to open for commercial traffic on 1 July 2000, comprises a 4 km immersed tube tunnel, 4 km reclaimed island and 8 km bridge. This paper presents a factual overview of the project in general, with a focus on the civil works. The project represents a record with regard to the volume of the immersed tube tunnel and the bridge, which is the world's longest cable-stayed bridge for combined rail and motorway traffic. The project also has a number of novel features in terms of the contract and tendering principles, the design basis, the construction methods and the environmental constraints. The project is outstanding by being completed almost half a year ahead of the initial time schedule and within budget.
