The possibility of contact-free monitoring of concrete using digital imaging was investigated. The method has proved to be very flexible for monitoring of concrete since no prior knowledge of the crack pattern was needed, although the method can be advantageous for measurements on other materials. Measured displacements can be used in different ways. The usefulness of the method was highlighted using results from laboratory investigations of shear-loaded concrete beams. The strain field of the beams was calculated with a finite element approximation, and crack propagation was monitored, and the relation between normal and shear displacement in a crack was calculated.
