This paper reviews the role of Manchester Airport in the transport network of the North West. The airport is now more than just a transport interchange, but affects the economy and environment over a wide area. A second runway was opened in February 2001, one of the largest civil engineering projects in the region. Increasingly attention is focused on how airports will manage the growth in road traffic and the pressure on surface access connections. At the same time, there is increasing concern about the effect on the environment of the forecast growth in air and road traffic.
