The introduction of the new tramway system in Athens was combined with the enhancement of the transport infrastructure in the city centre. To accomplish efficient use of the new transportation mode, priority was given to the tram over the rest of the motorised traffic. This paper discusses the adopted signal control approaches which were designed and implemented aiming at achieving tram priority. Features of these strategies included several signal control characteristics such as the minimum allowed green indication for a phase, the extension of the stage including the tram movement and the installation of an amber and red signal head.
