A large number of multi-reservoir hydropower systems are in operation all over the world in order to meet increasing power demand. To date, different optimisation methods have been applied to multi-reservoir systems. However, overcoming the computational effort required to find an optimal operating policy for multi-reservoir systems still remains a difficult task. The aim of this study was to optimise the operation of complex multi-reservoir hydropower systems using profust reliability – a theory used in the reliability analysis of manufactured systems. The profust-reliability-based optimisation model was applied to a system with reservoirs connected in series and parallel to determine monthly operating policies for synthetically generated streamflow. The results show that the model is applicable to multi-reservoir systems.
