The Paper deals with the uplift loading induced by regular and irregular water waves on the underside of platform decks in shallow and intermediate water depths. A three-dimensional approach is adopted in this study which incorporates the true characteristics of the loading mechanism. The experimental work makes use of high-speed video imagery as well as sensitive pressure measuring transducers and a high-speed data acquisition system. Laboratory scale measurements corresponding to both regular and irregular wave conditions are presented and discussed. The experimental results, which reveal for the first time important features associated with this type of loading, are compared with available data, and, where appropriate, improved predictive formulae are put forward
