In discussion with Bruce Lloyd, Marc Feigen, one of the authors of the McKinsey Study, Real Change Leaders, argues that middle management decisions require broad based behavioural changes, which will require them to learn new skills, particularly around the concept of “manager as coach”. In addition, a greater knowledge of a wide range of team roles and development issues will be required in future. Covers the strengths and weaknesses of the Japanese approach and the motivation factors which influence top management. Argues that it is not difficult to understand the basis of effective change management but it requires practice and commitment, combined with the right skill base, to make it happen well in practice.
