The 21st century is about sustainable management of environmental quality and greening of organizations (Singh and El-Kassar, 2019). Furthermore, the management of sustainable resources and pollution reduction possess key challenges for economic development of organizations and that asks for top management design and implement strategy and processes to manage it in sustainable ways (Oliva et al., 2019; Song et al., 2017). However, the research studies on micro-foundations of sustainable environmental management remains relatively under investigated (Jabbour et al., 2019; Jin et al., 2019; Pham et al., 2019) and this special issue on the micro-foundations of management of environmental quality is an attempt to bridge the gap. This special issue was received well and after several rounds of reviews and revisions, we found four suitable paper for inclusion here.

The first paper titled “Improving maintenance management practices on green building projects” the context of Malaysia. The paper suggests that research on socio-technical systems is required to enable the theoretical framework to be better integrated into green building maintenance management practices in the future and also suggests scope for future research studies in this particular area of knowledge.

The next paper titled “A house of sustainability based approach for green product design: setting future research agenda”. The key findings of this study ask for proactive sustainable designing significantly eases and increases the sustainability reporting and meeting the legislative guiding principle prescribed by the governmental agencies of the country.

The third paper titled “Intention to participate in Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission): role of social identity and perceived social norm”. The major findings of the study suggest that social identity and perceived social norms display important positive contribution toward intention to participate in clean India mission activity. In addition, this study found that perceived social participation norm partially mediates to the relationship between “sense of community” and “participation intention”.

The last paper in this special issue is titled “Factors affecting the spatial pattern of nitrate contamination in Texas aquifers”. The findings of the paper is that results show groundwater nitrate contamination is typically due to an over application of nitrogen fertilizers to cotton in the Southern High-Plains aquifer and to grassland in the Edwards–Trinity aquifer.

It is hoped that the special issue on “The microfoundations of management of environmental quality” with four paper provides fresh insights into how to use micro-level strategic resources to for sustainable environment.
