First European Centre of Excellence on Education for Sustainable Development established in Hamburg
The Free and Henseatic City of Hamburg, Germany’s second largest city, will host the first Centre of Excellence on Education for Sustainable Development in Europe. This will be part of the “European Reference Point for Technology Transfer for Sustainable Development” (ERP-TTSD), based at TuTech Innovation in Hamburg.
Hamburg as an open and multi-cultural city is well placed to host the first European Centre of Excellence, which will add one more feature to a City already well served by scientific organisations.
The Centre of Excellence will use the infra-structure provided by ERP-TTSD,which is Europe’s leading agency in respect of applying sustainable development approaches and methods to concrete problems. Coordinated by Prof. Walter Leal and his team at TuTech Innovation, the Centre of Excellence will fulfil its mandate. The Centre of Excellence will be instrumental in implementing European strategies for education for sustainable development, opening up its experiences to the whole of Europe.
The Centre of Excellence on Education for Sustainable Development in Europe started its activities in December 2005. The Centre will play a key role in organising training events, workshops, seminars, produce reports, books and support UNESCO’s efforts in relation to the Decade on Education for Sustainable Development in Europe. One of first activities of the Centre of Excellence will be the production of a publication on “Innovation in Education for Sustainable Development” and the organisation of the “2nd European Fair on Education for Sustainable Development” to be held in Hamburg in September 2006.
