Around 400 European cities have commited to reducing their carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption beyond the levels needed to achieve the EU’s 2020 climate goals.

The pledge, billed as one of the main highlights of this year’s Sustainable Energy Week, is a central element of a pact known as the “Covenant of Mayors” launched by the European Commission in January 2009. Several cities have already made such a commitment but they have yet to formally sign the pact. Performance against the targets will be assessed by external evaluators, and cities that fail to meet their commitments will be excluded from the covenant. The cities of Stockholm and Hamburg have been chosen as “European Environment Cities”, with Stockholm holding the title in 2010 and Hamburg in 2011.
