German renewables jump driven by solar power

Renewable electricity generation in Germany has reached 43 gigawatts (GW) at the end of 2009 – up by 12 per cent from 2008, the German Renewable Energy Association (BEE) has stated. This is 10-15 per cent more than federal government predictions.

More than half of the new generation comes from a massive boom in photovoltaic (PV) installations, says BEE. The new German coalition government will cut feed in tariffs for solar power by more than the planned 8 per cent reduction for 2010.
