Integrated Photomatrix Ltd (IPL) has recently launched the Glass lid Array(GLA) produced by the Hy-Comp Group at IPL (Plate 2). Constructed from polymer materials and evolved from the APEC type of package, the GLA is designed by IPL to meet the needs of the cost-competitive digital camera and optical device market. APEC advantages include rugged glass reinforced plastic construction,multi-level interconnect capability, highly accurate dimensional tolerances,thermal matching to the PCB and reduced weight.

IPL claim the GLA has many advantages. The main benefit is the lidding process, where the complete array is covered in one operation with optical grade glass within a vacuum process. Glass cleaning, greatly reduced handling and improved cleanliness in the cavity are all further benefits to the optical sensor market. The array can contain between 10-100 devices and this format is highly efficient for both die attach and wire bond assembly.
There are five GLA package formats available as standard products or, as is more normal, the GLA can be supplied semi or fully customised in a variety of sizes to match the die size, providing a cost-effective packaging solution.
