Deadline for submissions: October 31, 2013

In recent years, the numerous scandals at formerly renowned financial institutions and companies, revealed the inability of many organizations in preventing failures in ethical behavior within their activities.

The analysis of those events has renewed scholars' interest in the ethical problems in organizations, leading to the cooperation between different scientific disciplines. Recent approaches follow two essential and complementary routes: one aims to understand how individuals make decisions on ethically dubious issues; another one is intended to grasp the antecedents and consequences of social responsibility and sustainability practices. The main goal of this special issue is to set a dialogue between these research lines,which converge in the quest for scientific understanding of the current challenges of ethics, sustainability and social responsibility in organizations.

The complexities of individual, group and ethical decision-making processes are amplified in uncertain and turbulent environments. Hence the need to discuss theoretical models and empirical results, but also to evaluate main organizational strategies on these issues. Indeed, the practices of organizational intervention are particularly at stake in the context of the economic crisis nowadays, particularly in the prevention of misconduct in organizations

In the current scenario of economic uncertainty, in which many organizations are struggling to reduce costs in order to stay competitive, relevance of the corporate engagement in internal and external social responsibility practices has become an important topic in organization studies. For instance, increasing concern with adopting a proactive role related to the economic, social and environmental sustainability development, i.e. the organizations' commitment in activities of social responsibility seems to be changeable and contingent on diverse factors. Another line of analysis indicates that outcomes of investing in corporate social responsibility have come to be positively associated with some extra-role behaviors of multi-stakeholders. In brief, there are encouraging signals, but more research is necessary to drive the future status of corporate social responsibility theory and practice and the business responsibility in global society.

We therefore invite contributors to submit papers that may shed some light on the issues just mentioned above. Papers (not previously published elsewhere)must relate to at least one of the following broad topics:

  • social and economic consequences of misconduct in organization

  • ethical decision making: individual and group processes

  • the influence of national/regional institutional factors on the engagement in sustainable, ethical and/or socially responsible practices;

  • the impacts of sustainable, ethical and/or socially responsible performance at different levels of analysis (e.g. institutional, organizational, and individual levels);

Articles can be empirical or theoretical oriented. All types of methods –quantitative, qualitative or combinations – are acceptable.
