After several years of negotiations, the Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Electrical Electronic and Plumbing Trade Union agreed the terms for balloting on merging with each other. A successful ballot result created the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union with a membership of nearly one million, becoming the second largest union in Britain. Given the prominence and influence of the two unions prior to their merger it is anticipated major repercussions may flow from the merger.
