The need to change the span and quality of competencies of a company's human resources to match the requirements of the market and new technologies has resulted in a need to rethink how people are employed, organised and developed. The author examines five areas of relevance. First, he looks at the economic and technical factors which create pressures and influence the direction in which jobs and organisations might change. Secondly, implications for organisations are outlined. Thirdly, broad changes are broken down into objectives and principles which can then be made operational. Fourthly, he describes steps to be taken towards flexible manning arrangements with specific reference to contract staff. Lastly, a few thoughts are presented on current trends and their implications.
