In 1988 there were in England and Wales 28,714 laboratory‐diagnosed cases of campylobacter enteritis (diarrhoea), 24,123 cases of salmonella diarrhoea and 291 cases of listeria infection. Actual numbers of cases of food‐borne infection are not known, as many cases are not recorded and not laboratory‐confirmed, either because people do not consult their doctor because symptoms are very mild, or because the doctor does not send specimens to the laboratory.
