Look up the E number and find its chemical name.
Look up the chemical name in the alphabetical list.
Read across the chart to discover the use and potential effects of the substance. Each page has a chart giving the name of the additive, the E number, the function, a code with a face, potential effects, possible food use and other uses.
All the substances are colour‐coded as red, amber or green (and have smiley or non‐smiley faces) for quick, at‐a‐glace guidance.
There is also a similar section for additives used in cosmetics.
While the information could be extremely useful, it could be worrying to some people who see that a food additive has been given a red warning colour.
