This compact book provides information on additives found in food and also in cosmetics. This could be useful for those involved in nutrition and health.

It is a small compact book and is easy‐to‐use as one can:

  • Look up the E number and find its chemical name.

  • Look up the chemical name in the alphabetical list.

  • Read across the chart to discover the use and potential effects of the substance. Each page has a chart giving the name of the additive, the E number, the function, a code with a face, potential effects, possible food use and other uses.

  • All the substances are colour‐coded as red, amber or green (and have smiley or non‐smiley faces) for quick, at‐a‐glace guidance.

  • There is also a similar section for additives used in cosmetics.

While the information could be extremely useful, it could be worrying to some people who see that a food additive has been given a red warning colour.
