The 33rd Annual Report of the National Vegetable Research Station has just been published. In this, the Director focusses attention on the great benefit to be gained in co‐operative efforts between research establishments and universites, both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Such collaboration provides the vital link between the often highly academic studies of the university and the more practical aspects usually studied at the research institute. Such joint work with the Genetics Department of Birmingham University has shown by computer prediction that it should be possible to produce an inbred line which would yield as well as the best currently available F1 hybrids. These results are now being tested practically at Wellesbourne.
