White Paper on food safety

In January 2000, the European Commission published a White Paper that presented its position with respect to the management of food safety issues for the coming years. The paper set out:

  • the central goal of the highest possible level of health protection for the consumers of Europe's food;

  • confirmation of the adoption of a food safety policy that is overtly based on a "farm to table" approach, i.e. a comprehensive integrated approach;

  • forward plans for the creation of a European Food Safety Authority; and

  • an indication of the need for general reform of EU food safety legislation.
