EuroFEDA Antioxidants Benefits and Risks Conference Churchill College, Cambridge, 25-28 September
EuroFEDA is a project funded by the European Union under the Fifth Framework Programme. The focus of EuroFEDA is to promote research on dietary antioxidants in the promotion of health. A newsletter is produced and the contact for the UK is DawnBarrett, Communications Officer, IFR Enterprises Ltd, Norwich Research Park, Colney, Norwich NR4 7UA.
An international audience attended the conference.
The first day of the conference covered the case for and against antioxidants. The second morning concentrated on presentations on the evidence for effects at target sites and the afternoon covered valid biomarkers of antioxidant effects.
Day two included presentations on aspects of antioxidants on cellular signalling processes and antioxidants in relation to ageing.
On the final day an overview of the theme of the conference, antioxidants benefits and risks, was discussed as an overview and concluded with a panel discussion.
Throughout the conference there were excellent poster sessions on all aspects of antioxidants. There was an extensive display of very varied posters, with a whole range of contributors from students to established researchers. Some posters were of practical aspects of antioxidant nutrition while others were based on cellular metabolism.
One area that I found of particular interest as a practising dietitian was that on lutein and age-related macular disease.
