Diet and Heart Health Symposium 2

HEART UKCommonwealth Conference and Event Centre, Kensington, London16 September 2003

Coronary heart disease is a major killer in the UK, and dietary and lifestyle factors have been identified as a major contributor. Current evidence places elevated serum cholesterol as one of the main contributors to coronary heart disease risk. It is said that in the UK, 70 per cent of people have raised cholesterol levels.

The sessions looked at the demography of coronary heart disease and various aspects of diet. Aspects of a diet to reduce cholesterol levels, which includes soluble fibre, stanols or sterols and soya protein were shown to be proving beneficial. The conference also had a useful small trade exhibition. This useful conference, which included numerous practical pieces of information, was attended mainly by dietitians and nutritionists.
