Sense held its inaugural meeting in February 1996. It aims to help and promote self-help of self employed or freelance nutritionists and/or those with interests in the general area of food and nutrition.
Membership is open to those with a degree, recognised by the Nutrition Society, in nutrition or a directly related subject e.g. dietetics, medicine,biochemistry. The current membership numbers 50 plus.
Two meetings are held annually – Summer and Winter. Usually the summer meeting is held jointly with FDIG (Freelance Dietitians Interest Group). Each meeting contains some element of enlightenment i.e. discussion of topical nutrition issues, and some element of support i.e. advice which is relevant to all those who are self-employed.
Meetings have included speakers talking on such subjects as scientific communications, diet-gene interactions, neuro-linguistic programming, organic babyfoods, UK guidelines on dietary advice for people with diabetes, tax and business issues, nutritional profiling as suggested by the FSA, Glycaemic Index and CompEat for nutritional analysis.
Sense also aims to provide an electronic networking service to its members and members are encouraged to seek information, advice and enlist the help of other Sense members give to clients an even more comprehensive service than they could as individuals.
A register of members gives contact details of members and lists details of their expertise. The register is updated annually and circulated to members to promote networking.<!?tpb=12pt>
A two-tier membership exists:
Full membership: cost £50.00. This enables the member to attend both meetings free of charge and provides the member with a copy of the Register of all members which contains details of their expertise, skills etc.
Associate membership: cost £40.00. This provides the member with a copy of the Register only and is designed for those unable to attend meetings on a regular basis.
