Corporations are continually under pressure to improve performance. Many different indexes are used to evaluate performance by various groups with legitimate concerns; these include stockholders, customers, employees, suppliers, communities, and governmental units. Return on investment is a basic index, but the quality of products or services provided and contributions to the welfare of society in general are also evaluated. Thus corporations must periodically measure their performance on various indexes and compare the results to accepted standards.
