The power of computer mapping is being brought to life on a new CD-ROM, Cartesia 2, released by Ordnance Survey Britain's national mapping agency.
The free CD-ROM, which took over 3,000 hours to complete, details the huge range of products and services currently offered to business, education, the public and even overseas clients,as well as providing insights into Ordnance Survey's past and future.
Interactive multimedia features on Cartesia 2 guide the user straight to the most relevant information, so business users can go direct to products and services which fit their specific business or sector of the market. The CD is designed to provide a wealth of information to Ordnance Survey's army of regular customers and to introduce new users to the many products already in daily use in the industry. Over 50 case studies on the CD-ROM, plus video clips and mini presentations, show the innovative ways in which Ordnance Survey products are being used to improve business for a whole host of UK companies.
Highlights range from Autodesk's demonstration of how Battersea Power Station could be redeveloped into a retail shopping complex using Superplan Data and AutoCAD; to Southampton City Council's video clip showing the development of their ROMANSE traffic management project;through to a feature on The Business Database's YellowPoint, a new GIS-compatible dataset designed for customer, site and competitor location.
For the AEC sector, not only are there many relevant case studies and articles on the CD, but tailor-made packaging has been designed which leads the user straight to the section on Superplan products, seen by many as the base mapping of the industry. For users who have not yet adopted CAD, there is the facility to view Superplan Data on screen and interrogate it, showing just how useful it can be in formulating building plans and tenders.
Over six times more information is contained on Cartesia 2 than an earlier prototype and the files containing video sequences had to be compressed to a fraction of their original size simply to ensure that they would fit!
Steve Dunnico, Managing Director of ClearVision Marketing Services Ltd, who produced the CD-ROM for Ordnance Survey, comments: "Cartesia 2 represents one of the most detailed multimedia pieces we have ever produced it's an absolute goldmine of information packed onto a silver disc".
Tony Black, Ordnance Survey's Director of Marketing, adds: "We were the world's first national mapping agency to provide country-wide digital map coverage and we're keen to make the sheer diversity and ground-breaking nature of what we do far better known. This CD-ROM showcases what today's Ordnance Survey is all about".
A major innovation on Cartesia 2is the introduction of Osview. This is a highly compact piece of software that for the first time gives experience of real computerized maps without having to buy specialist software. Digital map data can transform the way a whole host of professions view their information from marketing to leisure, farming to insurance as is demonstrated on the disk.
Bundled with Osview is over 200Mb 200 different files of ten different types of computerized mapping at various scales, from "road atlas" -style maps, through 3-D terrain data to highly detailed mapping, showing the shapes of individual buildings at street level. Interactive map highlights include the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in Hampshire, the Royal Crescent in Bath, and the Tower of London.
Also included on Cartesia 2is a response form to enable users to register an interest in any of the products and services featured, plus a link to the Ordnance Survey Web site, www.ordsvy.gov.uk, and a screensaver featuring Mapman, Cartesia 2's mascot, dancing across the screen!
