Keywords:Farbe & Lack, Awards

For the twelfth time, the journal Farbe & Lack has awarded its prize for outstanding and innovative research in the field of paints and coatings technology.

The Farbe & Lack Award was recently presented to Dipl-Chem. Andreas Plagge (Plate 10), University of Erlangen, Germany, during the 6th Conference of the Coatings and Pigments Division (APi) of the German Chemical Society in Bad Mergentheim.

Andreas received the certificate, prize money of 2,500e, and bronze statue from Professor Dr Claus D. Eisenbach, head of the Stuttgart Research Institute for Pigments and Coatings and speaker of the prize jury, for his contribution"Coated implants new waterborne adhesive coatings based on cellulose films for ceramics, steel, and titanium surfaces".

In his eulogy, Eisenbach stressed the interdisciplinary character of the research work, which was achieved in close co-operation between the Institutes for Materials Science, University of Erlangen, and Macromolecular Chemistry,University of Dresden.

The work presents a new two-component coating system based on modified cellulose polymers, which shows excellent adhesion behaviour towards specially pre-treated surfaces of titanium, stainless steel, and the ceramic bone material hydro-oxyapatite. Thus, the system can be used as an adhesion coating for medical implants. In addition, a practical application technique for the coating system was developed.
