The Paint Research Institute of the Federation of Societies for Paint Technology has recently announced a new project for studying metal ion catalysts in the oxidation and polymerisation of paint and related coatings. The study, under Dr Duffy at Kent State University, will attempt to find a new concept of catalytic oxidation to replace lead and other heavy metal driers. The project will complement two others already in progress; one on mildew defacement is at Battelle, and the other on reflectivity of microvoid films is at Lehigh. There are also eleven basic research programmes being conducted around the U.S.A.
