New plant for the spray‐painting of shot‐blasted steel plate and sections at the Teesside works of British Steel has reduced paint consumption by 32%, compared with conventional automatic plant, and cut associated solvent emissions by a massive 85%, savings costs and minimising environmental pollution. The new conveyor‐fed automatic system, believed to be the first of its kind, has been designed, manufactured and installed by Air Industrial Developments Ltd. (AID), Walsall, England. AID has developed intrinsically safe photo‐electric sensors and associated software programmes to give precise control of the spray guns used in their automatic spray‐painting machines, thereby reducing overspray and ensuring uniform coating thickness.
