The most important aspect to the UK paint industry of the continued rise in the percentage of foreign‐built cars is, of course, that few, if any, of these imported vehicles are carrying surface coatings manufactured in this country. As coatings for the motor industry in its widest sense, ie, including all vehicle transport and the not insignificant business of replacement parts and panels, still constitute the largest individual sector of the industrial paints market, any study of future trends in surface treatments of motor vehicles is of considerable interest.
