Solution to slurry tank lining damage dilemma

Keywords Plascoat, Thermoplastics, Tanks, Coatings

A new heavy duty grade version of Plascoat's PPA571 thermoplastic reportedly looks like presenting manufacturers with a thick film solution to the problem of coating slurry tanks following a major trial success.

Traditionally lined with polyester or vitreous enamel slurry tanks have been prone to impact or stress damage during installation – with consequent repairs difficult and costly to carry out.

PPA571HES, launched on to the European market only recently primarily for the corrosion protection of pipes and fittings applications in the water and aqueous chemicals industries, was trialled on a large sectional, mild steel tank.

According to Plascoat, lined in a single electrostatic spray pass to between 400 and 500 microns on preheated steel without the need for a primer, the result was a pinhole-free coating that showed no damage following on-site collation. The company also considers that had any damage occurred, local repair of the surface would have been simple and low cost.

The rugged PPA571HES coating is designed to offer excellent UV, abrasion and chemical resistance, including the acidity levels associated with slurry tanks.

Both PPA571HES and PPA571H (for fluidised bed dipping) are said to have been developed with a higher melt viscosity than standard PPA571, reportedly giving the formulations the higher resilience sometimes required by coaters handling thicker metal sections of more than 5nm. A 30 per cent improvement in impact strength; an impressive elongation to break point of 500 per cent; and an extended temperature range make the coatings suitable for the harshest of conditions are claimed.

The Plascoat PPA571 series is now made up of standard PPA571 and PPA571ES,and the new PPA571H and PPA571HES, each a polyolefin based alloy applied in a single shot without the need for a primer, yet still considered to provide excellent long term adhesion.
