Specialist ink-pumping systems manufacturer Hydrair selected a model pressure transmitter from Delta Controls' 8000 series for monitoring high and low levels of ink in four separate storage tanks (Plate 1). The model chosen, the 8000WB pressure transmitter, is said to be eminently suited to this low-pressure head application, since it has corrosion resistant stainless steel wetted part and a flush diaphragm, features that meet the criteria for handling highly viscous liquids.

Hydrair is one of the UK's leading manufacturers of ink-pumping systems for Web offset presses. According to the company the ink transfer systems are designed to increase printing efficiency by controlling and monitoring automatically the ink supply to high-speed Web offset printing presses. In a recent contract Hydrair supplied four large storage tanks that act as ink reservoirs to the print machines. In addition to controlling ink flow to the press, Hydrair also needed to ensure that there would be a continuous supply of ink to afford non-stop print production. Depletion of ink supply would ruin the final output, resulting in additional print work at the print company's expense.
To prevent ink depletion Hydrair specified Delta's 8000WB pressure transmitter, one of which has been installed in the bottom of each of four ink storage tanks. A 4-20mA signal from the transmitter is relayed to a central control room where customer software is said to enable the continuous monitoring of ink volume in each tank.
As ink supplies fall to a preset low-level, both audible and visual alarms alert operators to the need for tank replenishment. During this particular operation the Delta transmitter is also stated to be instrumental in preventing ink overfill, since a high alarm status has also been programmed into the monitoring operation.
