The new biotechnology LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) from Thermo LabSystems, a Thermo Electron business, has been released (see Plate 1). Thermo LabSystems previewed Nautilus BioLIMS recently at Pittcon Congress in New Orleans. The new application is based upon the company's Nautilus LIMS technology; a solution which is said to already have a strong global presence in the bio-informatics arena.

Business development director of Thermo LabSystems, Joe Peden claims that Nautilus BioLIMS now offers advanced data management capabilities for techniques including CDNA library development, SNP scoring, sequencing and genotyping,together with more recent enhancements to functionality for array and microtitre plate handling and sequencer integration.

Commenting on the challenge facing LIMS vendors developing for the biotechnology market Peden said, "Not only do we need to address the vast quantities of data that are being generated by high throughput screening, but following the recent US (Patent Office) ruling, there is now the requirement to demonstrate 'a utility' for a gene before it can be patented, and as a result,the volume of proteomics data promises to be magnitudes greater than that generated from genomics." He continues, "I am confident our own solution brings to the market new levels of user empowerment, sample traceability and instrument integration. It provides huge benefits for customers in genomics and proteomics, by extracting information and knowledge from the vast data volumes generated in high throughput experimentation and screening."

Thermo LabSystems' recently announced network partnership agreement with Spotfire Inc., a global provider of Web-enabled decision analytics software, is designed to further accelerate product development and delivery. This agreement enables scientists and researchers rapidly to access data sets from Nautilus BioLIMS, analyze the data in Spotfire's Spotfire.net product and export findings back into the LIMS.
