The Harold Hayward Award for Innovation in Small Businesses is organised by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE). The award committee usually recognises just one company annually. This year,however, because there was only the narrowest of margins between the strongest two entrants, the panel of judges decided to acknowledge both. Just missing out on the main award, Freeman Technology received a rare "Highly Commended"certificate.

The company's founder Reg Freeman, winner of the BT sponsored Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2000, said, "I am delighted that our achievements as a small business and the success of our FT3 Powder Rheometer have been recognised by this prestigious award panel".
