Brits do it more in the bedroom

Keywords: Paints, Painting, Colour

Do you intend to paint your house in the near future? Have you decided which area to paint? Choosing the right colour is probably your number one priority, but do you know whether that colour is available in the type of paint you need for the job? All these are important questions recently put to European DIYers.

According to a newly published survey on pan-European-DIY painting habits carried out by The Rohm and Haas Paint Quality Institute (www.paintquality.co.uk) the Brits lead Europe when it comes to painting their homes. More of us do it, but the Brits do it more frequently, almost one in two British DIYers paint their homes more often than once a year, as compared to less than one in ten Germans –Brits paint more areas of the home and interestingly they most likely to do it in the bedroom. Forty seven per cent of Brits who had painted their homes had painted the bedroom, in comparison to 32 per cent of German DIY painters(Figures 1-3).

Where quality matters most

According to the survey, many Brits will also be preoccupied with how they are going to tackle their kitchens and bathrooms. After the bedroom, the kitchen and the bathroom are the 2nd equal most popular rooms to paint for the British DIYer. Areas where, according to the Institute's UK and Ireland Manager, Rehana Saghir, it is important to get the right paint for the job (Figure 4).

"Choice of colour is a key parameter for any paint job" she says "but to use the right paint is equally important, especially in areas of high traffic such as hallways and where paint is exposed to more extreme conditions, such as kitchens and bathrooms."

According to the survey, many of us are aware that it is important to use a high quality paint on areas such as kitchen and bathroom. But are these paints worth the higher price?

Paint for high performance areas

"Paints that are specifically for bathrooms or kitchens actually contain good quality ingredients that make the paint perform well. As a result the cost of can may be a little more but it is actually worth it," states Ms. Saghir.

High quality acrylic bathroom paints for example are more resistant to moisture, preventing mildew. They also adhere excellently to the surface, which means the paint will not peel or blister. High quality acrylic kitchen paints are formulzated to be wipeable so that stains or marks can be easily rubbed off with a sponge – without leaving behind a tell-tale scrub mark!

In Quality – it is worth it

"Investing in high quality paint is definitely worth it", says Ms. Saghir."You end up with a better finish that stays looking good over time". Calculated year on year, the little extra money you pay up front definitely pays off.

The institute considers that having a long- lasting finish that stays looking great longer will not just save a home owner time and money – it may well pay off the next time you decide to show a prospective buyer around! as well maintained homes tend to get a better asking price.

Details of the survey: The Paint Quality Institute talked to over 900 DIY painters across Europe from June to July 2000.
