Purpose

This study aims to develop a blockchain-based framework for enhancing agricultural certificates within the context of Islamic social finance. By integrating Shariah-compliant instruments such as Zakat, Waqf and Sadaqah with blockchain features – immutability, transparency and smart contracts – the research seeks to improve accountability, efficiency and trust in sustainable agricultural financing. The study further explores how blockchain-driven certification can strengthen financial inclusion for smallholder farmers, promote adherence to sustainable farming practices and support ethical finance principles aligned with the objectives of Islamic economics and sustainable development.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative analyses to examine the integration of blockchain in Islamic social finance. The qualitative phase uses thematic analysis and case studies to identify challenges and opportunities in agricultural certification. The quantitative phase uses descriptive and correlation analysis to measure stakeholder perceptions and system performance. A blockchain prototype was developed using Hyperledger Fabric with practical byzantine fault tolerance consensus to validate feasibility, efficiency and Shariah compliance. The framework’s effectiveness was evaluated through pilot testing, stakeholder surveys and empirical performance metrics.

Findings

The results demonstrate that blockchain integration significantly enhances transparency, efficiency and trust in Islamic social finance-based agricultural certification. The blockchain prototype reduced certificate processing time by 30%, improved compliance with sustainable farming practices by 40% and increased financial inclusion for smallholder farmers by 15%. Survey data revealed that 85% of stakeholders preferred blockchain-enabled certification over traditional systems due to its transparency and security. While high initial implementation costs and limited technical expertise remain challenges, the framework proved scalable, secure and fully compliant with Shariah principles.

Originality/value

This study provides a pioneering framework that integrates blockchain technology with Islamic social finance to enhance agricultural certification and sustainable development. Unlike prior research that treats blockchain and Islamic finance separately, this paper demonstrates how Shariah-compliant smart contracts can automate transparency, enforce ethical standards and facilitate inclusive agricultural financing. The use of permissioned blockchain (Hyperledger Fabric) ensures scalability, energy efficiency and security while maintaining religious compliance. By linking Zakat, Waqf and Sadaqah mechanisms with digital certification, the study introduces an innovative, ethical and technologically driven model for sustainable finance.
