Laser coding on injection mouldings for the medical industry

Swedish plastics company Polymed Hygienic AB is coding plastic injection moulded parts with a Lumonics Xymark dot matrix laser coding system. To meet its quality assurance, hygiene and product tracking requirements, Polymed has installed the Xymark system on to its production line to mark E haler devices destined for use in medicine for asthmatics and patients with allergies. Operating on a production line moving at speeds of up to 60 metres per minute, the Xymark system is marking a seven digit batch code on to the side of the E haler devices manufactured from thermal plastic (PBT).

Polymed sought permanent, unobtrusive coding and looked to Lumonics on the recommendation of another Lumonics customer in England. Polymed was keen to install a system which could ensure indelibility and also meet their stringent hygiene specifications. Polymed demanded a system which could provide hygienic, indelible marks without disrupting the production line for downtime and refilling consumables, and without the potential hygiene problem of solvent spillage.

The Xymark system, as installed by Polymed, offers users up to four lines of text in various dot matrix font formats together with updated software control, and large graphics capability, up to 34 dots high, for logos, special promotions and larger codes. The system, which is designed to be more compact to save space on the factory floor, now offers users new software with a security date printing and encrypted code marking option ideal for manufacturers wanting to keep coded product information private. "Our specifications demanded a system which provided inconspicuous, precise and indelible coding," said Anders Granstrand. "Laser coding ensured we could code precisely where we wanted and have the accurate product tracking we required."
