A large, free, searchable database of manufacturing information is now available on the Internet through the Edinburgh Engineering Virtual Library (EEVL). RAM (recent advances in manufacturing) is a bibliographic database for manufacturing and related areas. Updated monthly, RAM contains details of around 25,000 articles, and indexes over 500 niche and mainstream journals, magazines, and conference proceedings. It was previously available only by subscription.

RAM covers all the main areas of manufacturing, claims EEVL, including: Manufacturing industry,Manufacturing management, Product development, Manufacturing systems and processes, Manufacturing planning and control, Maintenance, etc. RAM is produced by the Library and Information Services Department at the Nottingham Trent University.

The complete RAM database is now available at no cost through EEVL. EEVL is a non-profit gateway to engineering information on the Internet, funded through the Joint Information Systems Committee's Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib), and based at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. EEVL is a major source of networked information for Engineers. EEVL was chosen as Best New Site by Information World Review and as a Best Library-Related Web Site by Library Hi Tech.It has featured in various publications including FT Online, The Engineer, Professional Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Control & Instrumentation, Process Engineering, IIE Solutions, Electrical Review, Electronics Weekly, Electronics World, Managing Information, Newsbytes, The Electronic Library, Science and Engineering Network News, and the Times Higher Education Supplement. EEVL is hand-crafted and user-friendly, and provides various no-cost services which give easy access to networked engineering resources, with the emphasis on the UK.

RAM is of use to those in industry, business, academia and research institutions worldwide who are looking for references to manufacturing literature. It is a unique, value-added manufacturing information service.
