Automation specialist Festo has launched a new range of pneumatically-driven,small dimension linear axes for handling and assembly functions. The HMPL linear actuator is extremely slender and robust, making it perfect, in Festo's opinion,as a highly-precise individual module. It can also be combined quickly and easily with other modules for pick-and-place operation or as a portal unit (see Plate 6).

High speed and cycle time are achieved due to minimal dead weight and low mass and, hence, short oscillation decay times. Even at very high velocity, repetition accuracy is believed to be ensured owing to HMPL's advanced, functional design. The HMPL linear actuator comes in diameters of 12mm, 16mm and 20mm and maximum stroke length options ranging from 30mm to 200mm.
HMPL can be equipped with adaptive functions and features to accurately meet the requirements of specific applications without unnecessary costs, say Festo. A flexible intermediate position can be approached from either the retracted or the advanced end position, as well as traversing movements. There is an intermediate position with external stop, while an optional, adaptable clamping unit uses a clamping cartridge as a safety function. An external stop system has a sensor, progressive shock absorbers and an adjustable end position.
HMPL utilises user-friendly installation technology and an LED-driven visual position indicator to keep the operator in the picture. A cable guide system offers protection against mechanical influences. Applications for the handling axis include operations in the field of small part assembly, palletising, part sorting and related steps. HMPL joins the extensive Festo modular system for handling and assembly technology.
