Alarm for the elderly fastened with ultrasonic technology

Cooper Security Ltd has chosen to use ultrasonic welding technology in the production of its alarm pendants used by the elderly and disabled. The unit is designed to be worn on the wrist, and needs to be strong and waterproof to cope with everyday use (see Plate 8).

Kerry Ultrasonics provided a FD1000 20kHz plastics welder that could join the polycarbonate components with a tough weld of repeatable quality. The alarm signals for help if the wearer is in distress, so the consequences of the unit failing would be very serious. Everyday wear puts great stresses on the wrist-worn casing, which is able to withstand large forces such as a fall or knock. Kerry's ultrasonic welder produced the strong coupling necessary, and the process was found to be cleaner than glue bonding.

Kerry equipment has been used at Cooper Security Ltd for several years and satisfaction with the existing welding process was a major factor in deciding to use ultrasonic welding technology for assembling the new security alarm fobs.
