Smartscan Limited have recently launched what it believes to be the world's first integrated safety control system using field bus technology. The Smartscan 6000 system is poised to revolutionise safe control system design for all those involved in industrial automation.
Smartscan 6000 provides a central controller and a range of SAFENET compatible safety components,including light curtains, emergency stop buttons, gate interlocks, safety mats,two hand controls etc. all interconnected on a two wire bus (Plate 3).
The 6000 employs an innovative method of communications, removing the need for reliance on software between a smart controller and field safety devices.
The system uses a Windows-based graphics package to aid design and configuration of a safe control system. Speed and flexibility of design coupled with installation benefits associated with a two wire bus compared with dual channel hardwiring techniques have proved substantial. Smartscan 6000 provides on-line diagnostics and monitoring which can be fully integrated with the automation process thereby bringing safe system design into the twenty-first century, claims the company.

The resulting integrity of design provides a system suitable for the majority of high risk machines,meeting the exacting standards of performance for Category 4 applications as defined in European Standard EN 954-1 Safety Related Control Systems for Industrial Machines.
