CompAir Tools & Equipment launches full system approach to self-feed units

Keywords Feeders, Systems

CompAir Tools &Equipment, in partnership with Omron and Siebe Pneumatics, two of the major players in the fields of electronics and pneumatic controls, is launching a full systems approach to purchasing new self-feed units. The CompAir range of self-feed units is designed to provide manufacturers with low cost automation solutions for drilling and tapping operations (see Plate 7).

Derek Webb, CompAir Tools& Equipment's engineering manager, says: "We can now offer PLCs, pneumatic to PLC interfaces, inverters, pneumatic logic components and rotary index tables, to complement our extensive self-feed unit offering. The objective is to provide customers with a single source operation for all their self-feed unit needs, rather than them having to source the mechanical element for one supplier and the electronic and pneumatic control elements from additional suppliers."

The CompAir self-feed unit range encompasses models suitable for the machining of most modern materials, including metals, plastics, wood and glass. Units are used extensively throughout industries such as furniture and toy manufacturing, die casting, engineering, automotive production, sub-contracting machining and injection moulding.

Units also combine an air or electric powered motor with double acting, self-lubricating cylinder into a clean line package. Depending on the control system and variety of attachments specified, the unit can be used for any drilling, tapping, screw driving or nutrunning operation. Units can be set for any stroke from 8mm-75mm, providing for deep hole drilling applications and greater clearances for fixtures and indexing tables.

A double action air cylinder on all CompAirself feed units ensures that set thrust can be maintained throughout the full 75mm stroke of the unit. Cycle times are greatly improved as the drill bit cuts more efficiently. Drill life is also prolonged and tap breakage prevented as more accurate control of the feed rate is possible. Rate of feed and retraction of the cylinder is controlled by valves in the control head. Manual, partial and fully automatic control options are available.

Ease of installation and use is assured by a range of flexible mounting options. The units can either be permanently mounted into a dedicated machine for long-run production, or quickly and easily changed for various set ups and short-run production.

Self-Feed Units are supplied with a complete range of attachments. These include a drill chuck of up to 10mm capacity, square drives for nutrunners, a ball clutch for screwdrivers and flexible collets for tappers. Standard accessories include isolation fittings for remote advance and retract, upper guard with depth indicator, chuck key with drill unit, and collet spanners with tapping unit. A full range of optional accessories is also available for specialist operations.
