New high speed data link for digital data

Keywords: Data, High speed

IDM Electronics introduces Veocity™ HSDL(High Speed Data Link), a new slip ring technology developed for the transfer of high-speed digital data across rotating interfaces (see Plate 9). The Veocity HSDL is based on controlled impedance transmission line technology, is DC coupled and can be used as a passive connection. It is protocol independent and capable of reliably transmitting digital data at up to 1.2 Gigabit/sec per channel.

The simple and reliable design meets the latest EMI and EMC requirements and is ideal for demanding applications including digital data links in electro optical systems, multi-function radar, forward looking infrared systems, imaging systems and factory automation communication systems.

The Veocity HSDL supports a wide variety of digital data protocols including Fibre Channel, Gbit Ethernet and other 1+Gbit/sec formats. There is no lower limit on data speeds and the device will operate from DC to 1.2 Gb/s making it suitable for TAXI, FDDI, Hot Link, SONET and Ethernet throughout the full range of their data rates.

Veocity HSDL can be integrated with power, signal, video and other data channels to provide a multi-functional slip ring assembly. Several Gbit/sec channels can be provided in a single assembly to provide a space efficient solution for multi-channel applications.

The low profile, compact and self contained design has a high reliability of 10-12 BER and can accommodate continuous, bi-directional rotational speeds up to 500rpm. Its patent pending off-axis design, allows the unit to be configured for a hollow shaft installation, for example in conjunction with fluid rotary unions, fibre optic rotary joints or other slip ring assemblies.

The Veocity HDSL is suitable for a wide range of applications in military vehicles, radar systems, communication systems and computer networks. It is part of a wide range of high performance slip ring and mechanical assemblies from IDM Electronics, a subsidiary of the Kaydon Corporation, the worlds leading supplier of rotary electrical and fibre optic signal transfer products.
