Ultra-compact servo motor with built-in coupling simplifies design

Keywords: Motors, Coupling, High Density Drives

Just launched is a new patented servo motor, the Coupmotor, with an integral coupling that connects directly to the motor drive shaft (see Plate 10).

This motor solution is six times smaller than conventional designs. It will provide increased flexibility for designers and reduce costs for machinery manufacturers.

The usual servo motor requires a separate coupling and a coupling housing, but this new model saves space by eliminating the coupling housing.

The new servo motor concept, devised by the Swedish company High Density Drives AB, is a further development of their Stritorque shaft-equipped servo motor.

"This compact motor has a torque/volume ratio of an incredible 6.8Nm per litre", says Rolf Ohlsson, the company's marketing manager. "Eliminating the coupling housing means that there are fewer parts to be designed into the machinery of which it will form a part. This simplifies the logistics and reduces the manufacturer's costs. The motor can also be used to modify existing machinery."

The light Coupmotor is said to have aroused great interest in the packaging, missile, aviation and space industries, and is already in use by several large companies. The motor's small size and low heat generation also make it suitable for clean room areas, where every square metre is expensive and the ventilation system costs are high.

Two versions

"The servo motor is available in two versions, of 62mm and 89mm length, and despite its compact dimensions has the same performance (5Nm at 3,000rev./min.) as conventional servo motors that are six times larger",continues Rolf Ohlsson. "No new drive electronics are required; all the most modern drive systems can be used. The motors are normally delivered complete with resolvers or encoders, but can also be equipped with high resolution feedback, in accordance with SinCos and EnDAT standards."

The motors have three different coupling types, all with a metal bellows and two different bellows lengths. One type of coupling uses an expanding shaft and the other has a clamping screw for connection to machine shafts of 5-20mm diameter. The third version has two stop screws and will fit shafts of 6-28mm diameter.

The company's Web site includes a simple and self-explanatory formula. The customer can enter the key data to receive proposals for various servo motor alternatives, depending on the desired torque range, and also see a sketch of the appropriate motor with its specifications.

High Density Drives develops solutions and applications for high-torque motors. The motors, which are assembled in Sweden, are based on a new principle for the location of the iron and copper stator components.
