The Japan Handbook is the third in the Regional Handbooks of Economic

Development Prospects series published by Fitzroy Dearborn. The book is aimed at students, scholars and the general educated public, and its main purpose is to “provide an overview of the country at the end of a century in which it has undergone huge changes”.

While the editor admits that no single volume could hope to cover every single aspect of a country as complex and ever‐changing as Japan, the book endeavours “to treat a defined range of complex problems and data, concisely, accessibly and evenhandedly.”
