Your reviewer has long been of the opinion that it is regrettable that compilers of author bibliographies, such as this magnificent example now before us, do not make it a practice to devote a section in their preliminary pages to the methods they adopted when embarking upon their research. What an abundance of accumulated expertise would be released to the world of letters if this were to occur. That Dr O’Brien lets in a minor shaft of light only whets the professional appetite more. We are told in his preface that his bibliography was the result of six years’ work....
